Begin with the climb you can prepare for
A mountain journey starts well before reaching the trail. Think about why you want to climb, the time you can set aside and how you will prepare. Be open about your walking experience and any concerns you want to discuss.
Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude environment. Fitness and determination do not remove the effects of altitude, and reaching the summit is never guaranteed. Individual medical suitability belongs in a conversation with a qualified health professional.
Understand the route and schedule
Machame, Lemosho and Marangu offer different approaches and accommodation styles. Marangu uses huts; the other routes discussed on this site use designated camping arrangements. A route name should be the start of a discussion, not the whole decision.
Ask for the complete programme: days on the mountain, the intended progression, sleeping arrangements and what happens before and after the trek. Discuss current route access and operating conditions before confirming travel.
Make time for acclimatisation
The pace of ascent and the time allocated to the climb deserve careful attention. A shorter itinerary should not be chosen simply to reduce the number of holiday days. Talk through the proposed schedule and the reasons behind it.
Follow the mountain team’s instructions and communicate how you feel. This guide provides a planning overview; a confirmed climb requires a detailed briefing and arrangements appropriate to the trip.
Prepare your questions
Ask what equipment is included, what you must bring, how luggage is handled, what meals and drinking water arrangements apply and what emergency procedures are proposed. Confirm insurance appropriate to the intended activity and altitude with your insurer.
You should understand the practical arrangements before making a commitment. If something is unclear, ask for it in writing rather than assuming it is part of the package.
Connect the mountain to your holiday
Leave room for arrival, preparation and recovery. A safari or island stay can follow the trek, but the itinerary should allow those experiences to be enjoyed rather than squeezed between tight connections.
Send Eastara your available dates, preferred route if you have one, walking experience and the wider holiday you would like to create. We will discuss the planning options and the arrangements to clarify.
